About ReCell®

ReCell® is an innovative device that enables a surgeon to apply skin cells, collected from a small sample of the patient’s own skin, to an area that needs new cells to ensure appropriate healing, skin texture and skin colour.
ReCell® produces a a suspension that contains all of the cells necessary to promote healthy skin growth. The spray has cells to promote healing (keratinocytes) and cells that reintroduce colour in scars or areas of excess whiteness (melanocytes).

The procedure

A small sample of skin (biopsy) is collected from an area close to the skin you want to treat. This ensures the treated area has the same texture and colour as the surrounding skin. The biopsy is collected after you have received medication to numb any discomfort. The biopsy is usually around one to two centimetres square and is also treated with the spray to help it heal properly.

While the surgeon is preparing the area to be treated, the skin will be placed into The ReCell® kit. The ReCell® device will separate the cells allowing the surgeon to spray it onto the skin.

After the operation

After the operation the treated area and biopsy site will be covered with a dressing. The area will initially be numb but may sting soon after the operation. This is normal and you are usually allowed to take medication to reduce any discomfort.

After days three to five (depending on the reason why you had ReCell®) the dressing will be removed by your doctor or clinic nurse. The skin will be red and there may be some scabs. This is normal. Your doctor will give you advice concerning what creams you are allowed to use and what you should expect after the treatment.

If you have had the treatment to reintroduce pigment (e.g. Vitiligo), the re-pigmentation will occur slowly over several months as the cells grow, mature and start to produce pigment (melanin). Your surgeon will be able to advise you how long the repigmentation will occur.

Long term results

The results following surgery with ReCell® is highly dependant on the reason for undergoing the treatment, the severity of your infliction and the nature of your body to recuperate after an operation. It is normal for the pigmentation to take some time to reach its optimum state. Your surgeon will be able to give you some indication of how long it will take in your case.
